SPEED
What is the fastest animal in the table below
?............................................................
How many animals can run faster than you ?
............................................................
To answer the second question you will compare the distance a number of animals
can run in 10 seconds.
What distance will these animals travel in a ten second period?
First you will have to time yourself over a given distance (say 100 metres) and then
calculate the distance you would have covered in 10 seconds.
| Estimate | Calculated | |||
| Animal Name | Dist in 10 sec | Dist in 10 sec | Metres/Sec | Speed kph |
| "Me" ---(Yes you are an animal!) | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 |
| Easter Grey Kangaroo | 3 | 3 | 3 | 60 kph |
| Echidna ( Max.speed for short period) | 3 | 3 | 3 | 10 kph |
| Emu | 3 | 3 | 3 | 60 kph |
| Wombat | 3 | 3 | 3 | 30 kph |
| Cheetah | 3 | 3 | 3 | 110 kph |
| African Elephant | 3 | 3 | 3 | 40 kph |
| J Landy - Olympic runner | 3 | 3 | 3 | 24 kph |
Out of interest - look at 40 kph, that is the maximum speed a car is allowed to travel in a school zone. Work out how far a car would travel in "ONE" second. Interesting isn't it?!
